Send a Message!

If you're concerned with Metro's services, we urge you to get in touch with the appropriate State/local governmental or Metro officials, depending upon the issue. (See Today's Issues for our current suggestions!) This section is a "How to...." There is no better way to help improve Metro than to communicate effectively with the right people who can effect the improvements you want. Express compliments, as well, when deserved!

We urge Metroriders to communicate directly by email or snail mail
—to State and local officials (listed below) about major policy and funding issues; and
—to Metro's Board/staff (listed below) about Metro policy, funding and operational issues
What to Say?
Be brief; generally, write no more than one page. The officials you are writing to are busy and they’d appreciate your making your major point in the first couple of paragraphs. Download sample letter.

Be respectful; your addressees have tough jobs to do. State your concerns (or pay your compliments) directly.

Give details whenever possible. Stating the facts will help.

Always ask for a response. If you’re e-mailing, supply your post office mailing address so addressees will recognize that you are a constituent.

Send a copy to us. mail@metroriders.org or MetroRiders.Org, P.O. Box 17781, Washington, D.C. 20036-7781.

Who?
Knowing to whom to communicate your view depends upon the issue.

1. State, Local Officials: Crowding/capacity issues, funding and fare increase issues should be addressed to top-level officials in the jurisdictions who appoint the members of the Metro Board of Directors and who approve subsidy payments to Metro. These jurisdictions (State of Maryland; District of Columbia; Arlington County, Fairfax County, City of Alexandria, City of Fairfax, and City of Falls Church, Virginia) collectively are called the “Contributing Jurisdictions.” These leaders ultimately decide how much annual operating subsidy to give Metro each year to supplement rail and bus fare box revenues and whether to finance the cost of needed new Metrorail cars and Metrobuses and MetroAccess.

The important addressees for these purposes are:
State, Local Officials (select your state): Maryland, DC, Virginia

2. Metro Board: Metro Operational Issues (system delays, service quality, conditions of facilities, fare/parking issues, etc.) should be addressed to the Metro Consumer Service staff (csvc@wmata.com) and to the members of the Metro Board of Directors:

Metro Board of Directors (select your state): Maryland, DC, Virginia
Snail Mailing Address:
Board of Directors
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
600 Fifth Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001

On all letters to the Metro Board of Directors, send a copy to the head of the Metro staff:
Mr. John A Catoe
Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
600 Fifth Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001

Emails to the General Manager should be sent to John.Catoe@wmata.com

Sending Emails to the Metro Board of Directors
An email address has been established by Metro for the public to send emails to all or some of the Metro Board of Directors: BoardofDirectors@wmata.com, and the following guidance has been  provided by Metro staff as to how that email system works.

“The Board gets copies of all emails or letters related to policy matters. If the email or letter requires a response, staff generally drafts the response and forwards it to the Board member for review and signature.

“There are times when an email or letter addresses a very specific issue or detail that does not have a policy implication. In these cases, the email or letter is sent to the appropriate staff member for research and resolution. These letters or emails are generally signed by upper level management such as the CEO, a Deputy General Manager, Assistant General Manager or Chief Operating Officer. “

NOTE:  It isn’t clear how soon that emails sent to Metro Board members are actually received by them – whether immediately upon receipt at @wmata.com or later when a draft response has been prepared for the Board member’s possible use in response. (Actual practice may vary based on individual Board member preferences.) If your email to the Board relates to an issue that is coming before the full Board or one of its Committees on a date certain, either send your email well in advance of the scheduled Board discussion or flag at the top of your email that you want Metro staff to forward your email to the Board immediately.

To protect as best we can against the filtering process, MetroRiders.Org puts a cover note on our emails to the Metro Board addressed to the Metro staff: "Please forward this email to each member of the Metro Board today. Please send us a "reply" email indicating that our letter has in fact been forwarded to each Board member. Thanks"
